Hello {{first_name | Robigalia Readers}},

Welcome back to another edition of the Robigalia Roundup!

If you’re new here, Robigalia is your weekly roundup of the latest research, researchers, scholarships, and opportunities in plant pathology globally.

In this week’s newsletter…

I highlight a recent study examining the use of genome-wide association studies for effector gene prediction.

I introduce Fazal Manan, a PhD candidate from North Dakota State University.

As always, there are several new job and PhD opportunities listed. Make sure you’re a subscriber to have these opportunities and events delivered directly to your inbox every Monday.

Weekly Plant Pathology Highlights

Researcher of the Week

⭐ Meet Fazal Manan⭐

This week, I’m happy to introduce Fazal Mannan, a PhD candidate from North Dakota State University, as our researcher of the week!

Fazal’s passion for plant pathology stems from an early interest in solving agricultural challenges, inspired by witnessing the devastating impact of plant diseases on food security during his undergraduate studies in agricultural biochemistry.

Now during his PhD research, he is working on understanding the genetics and genomics of bacterial leaf streak (BLS) disease in wheat, with a focus on identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with resistance, exploring host-pathogen interactions, and uncovering bacterial factors involved in pathogenicity.

Among his notable achievements, he has identified and validated genetic resistance in wheat to both bacterial and fungal pathogens, both of which have contributed to an improved understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease resistance.

In the short term, Fazal aims to secure a postdoctoral position to further enhance his expertise in plant-pathogen interactions and disease resistance. In the long-term goal he hopes of becoming an independent researcher focused on developing sustainable solutions to crop diseases.

While deeply passionate about science, Fazal also finds joy in storytelling and he often writes fictional short stories as a creative outlet.

If you want to find out more about Fazal’s research, you can reach him via LinkedIn or post your questions in the comments.
